What is a Fractional Laser?
The Fractional Laser Resurfacing removes layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method where columns of skin are removed, leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing. There are two general types of fractional resurfacing:
Ablative: It is more aggressive treatment that requires longer downtime and aftercare as it removes layers of tissue on the skin’s surface and stimulates collagen below the surface.
Non-ablative: It is less aggressive treatment that has smaller results and shorter downtime as it doesn’t remove surface tissue
Not following the instructions for aftercare may end you up in trouble. Especially if you’re doing ablative resurfacing, which requires waiting for a period of skin regrowth. Your dermatologist will let you know whether or not your skin can handle the laser, so definitely schedule a consultation regardless.
Fractional laser treatment can be used in all skin types and patients, but the techniques may vary depending on age of the patient, skin type, sun exposure and body location. Fractional laser treatment can be combined with surgery and other skin treatments.
Most of the patients tolerate the treatment procedure easily. Patients depending upon their skin condition and treatment can return to work directly after treatments or the following day.
