Nd: YAG laser is a solid state laser in which Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd: YAG) is used as a laser medium. These lasers are used in many scientific applications such as Lasik surgery and Laser Spectroscopy.
It is a four-level laser system and therefore, laser action works on four different energy levels. Nd: YAG lasers operate in both pulsed and continuous mode. They generate laser light commonly in the near-infrared region of the spectrum at 1064 nanometers (nm) and emits laser light at several different wavelengths including 1440 nm, 1320 nm, 1120 nm, and 940 nm. Therefore, they are capable to reach deeper layers of skin tissue than other types of lasers.
How does Nd: YAG Laser work?
A wavelength of high energy light is emitted, which when focused on a certain skin condition creates heat and destroy diseased cells. The following skin disorders can be treated with Nd:YAG laser beams:
- Spider and thread veins in the face and legs
- Vascular birthmark
- Removes brown age spots
- For hair removal such underarms, bikini line, face, neck, back, chest and legs
- Effective for treating dark (brown/black) hair
- Removal of Blue, grey and black tattoos
- Treat nail disorder caused by fungal pathogens
- Improve wrinkles in photo-aged skin
Prior to the treatment correct diagnosis should be made by the dermatologist, particularly when pigmented lesions are targeted, to avoid mistreatment of skin cancer such as melanoma. Throughout the treatment session the patient must wear eye protection and an ice pack may be applied to soothe the treated area immediately after the treatment. The patient should avoid scrubbing the area, and/or use of abrasive skin cleansers.
