Child Dentistry

Kids start getting their set of primary ‘milk’ teeth when they are as young as 6 months old. And at the age of 6-7 years, humans start losing their milk teeth and the permanent teeth start erupting. The milk teeth form the basis of developing permanent teeth.

In recent years the cases of caries in children have grown exponentially. Therefore, we should take care of our baby’s teeth in the very early stages of their life by setting Oral Hygiene routine and regular visits to pediatric dentist.

Treatment Options

Root Canal Treatment in Milk Teeth: Root canal treatment is a simple procedure wherein instruments are used to clean the root canals of teeth. It is followed by inserting a medication so as to maintain the teeth properly in the oral cavity. It removes the infection from the pulp. Pulp is the living tissue found inside the tooth’s roots and contains the tooth’s nerves. So, tooth pain is a common indication that decay has moved into the pulp.

Oral Habits in children: There are some common habits seen in children such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, lip biting, grinding of teeth, nail-biting, etc. There are certain habit breaking appliances that assist the child who is willing to quit the habit. They may be removable or fixed appliances. Some of them are:

  • Twin Block
  • Frankly
  • Habit Breaking appliances
  • Space Maintainers
  • Treatment of tooth cavities
  • Head Gear

Fluoride treatment: Tooth decay is the common problem in children because of lack of proper dexterity of brushing in children. Fluoride application treatment in children at regular intervals can helps to fight decay. It treats plaque and bacteria which can cause enamel loss and further leads to cavities. Fluoride also strengthens the tooth structure & helps in bone growth. During the treatment, the dentist incorporates fluoride ions into the tooth structure making them more prone to acid dissolution.

Sealants: The pits & fissures in molars and premolars works as potential traps for bacteria & food and make it susceptible to decay. Therefore, as a preventive measure, certain pits and fissure sealants are placed. Sealants are plastic coatings placed on the chewing surface of the permanent tooth. They protect the tooth from decay. Because of fissures the permanent back teeth, molars, and premolars are vulnerable to decay.
