Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing
Move your tongue on your teeth to feel the tartar build up at the back of your teeth. During Ultra Sonic Scaling and Polishing, your hygienist cleans all the deposits and strains from your teeth. Your teeth are polished and all the tartar on your teeth is scaled away.
Due to the saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth, it also build-up a deposit of calcium on the teeth. It provides the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums. The objective of the ULtrasonic scaling and polishing is basically to clean the surfaces of teeth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them.
The dentist uses an specialized ultrasonic instrument which uses tickling vibrations to loosen up the larger pieces of tartar. It sprays the cooling mist of water to clean the particles and keep the temperature normal. Sometimes fine hand tools are also used to remove smaller deposits of tartar. They remove smaller tartar pieces carefully by scraping them off with moderate amount of pressure.
Once the tartar is removed the dentist polish your teeth. A slow speed hand tool with soft rubber cup is used to spun a Prophylaxis (short for prophy) paste around on the teeth to make them shiny smooth.
Is it painful?
It is recommended twice a year but if you have good oral hygiene, then you can also get it done once a year. Most people find it painless with some tickling sensations and a feeling of pressure during scraping. But it is quite enjoyable.
